University Centre of Documentation

The centre was set up on March 9, 2000 and it is composed of the Unified Biomedical Technical Scientific Library of Montedago (Biblioteca Tecnico Scientifica Biomedica Unificata), as well as the Library of the Faculty of Economics "Giorgio Fuà". The centre has three branches: CAD Polo Villarey (the Faculty of Economics "Giorgio Fuà"), CAD Polo Torrette (the Faculty of Medicine) and CAD Monteago (the Faculty of Engineering). An on-line search for texts and materials available at the centre can be carried out from any of the three branches.

Library loans are permitted for a total of three texts (5 for academic staff and students who are working on their thesis and are about to graduate) for a period of 15 days. If the texts are not handed in within 15 days the loan is automatically extended for a maximum period of 30 days. However, during the subsequent 15 days the library staff may request the return of the texts borrowed. In this case, the required texts must be returned within a week.

The following are not allowed out on loan:
  • textbooks pertaining to programmes of courses being held in the current academic year;
  • periodicals;
  • some code books or journals;
  • statistical data;
  • reference books;
  • works of particular value and those published prior to 1850;
  • material on microfiche and microfilm;
  • data banks;
  • manuals.

The materials in the library are divided into sections:

  • European Community
  • Statistical Documentation
  • Economics Reports
  • Books
  • Periodicals.

    The works in each sector are then classified by subject.

    THE FACULTY LIBRARY

    The library is located in the main building of the Faculty of Economics "Giorgio Fuà" on the first floor. It specializes in social sciences and has about 90,000 volumes and 2,050 periodicals, 1,376 of which are currently received. About 70% of the texts are in foreign languages (English, French, German, and Spanish) and there are national and international daily newspapers, magazines and journals available for consultation.
    The library operates under an open library system which means that students are allowed direct access to materials. Upon request students may examine library material on microfilm and microfiche. There is an automated system which uses personal computers as computer terminals available for an on-line search of works purchased after 1983. Facilities include 240 places in various reading rooms, a loan service for Italian libraries, data banks and a photocopying service.

    Upon written permission students may also consult those volumes belonging to the various institutes and departments which appear in the general catalogue. Library materials on audio tape concerning language learning are available at the CSAL, the Multimedia Language Centre.

    Periodicals, code books, encyclopaedias, manuals, dictionaries and textbooks pertaining to courses held during the academic year cannot be taken out on loan. Access to the library requires a library card issued by the library staff.

    Opening hours:
    Monday to Friday 8:45 a.m.- 7:00 p.m.
    Saturdays 8:45 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. (holidays excepted)

    During the period of the academic year when lessons are held, the library will remain open until 10:30 p.m. during some days of the week (please check notices posted). It is closed from August 5th to 20th every year for inventory purposes.

Italian Language courses

 Since all lessons are in Italian, students must have a command of the language in order to attend lectures. CSAL (Centro di supporto all'apprendimento delle lingue -  Support Centre for Language Learning) - Piazzale Martelli - Tel. 071 2207170 - Fax 071 2207169 - runs an Italian course as a foreign language for all the University SOCRATES-ERASMUS and other international project students. The aim of this course is, on one hand, to acquaint students with the Italian language and, on the other hand, to provide more specific knowledge linked to the technical language used in each faculty. Lessons are given by expert teachers who develop a syllabus specifically tailored to meet the language problems of students with diverse cultural backgrounds using modern technology. There will be an entrance test at the beginning of October in order to attend the intensive 40-hour course followed by lessons of 8 hours per week. Lessons will take place in the Language Laboratory. The Language Media Centre is to be found (open Monday to Friday from 09h00 to 13h00 and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the afternoon from 14h15 to 17h15). The Media Centre is open to students, lecturers, and all University personnel who wish to learn (independently) a foreign language. CSAL experts and technicians are on hand should you need help. The Media Centre provides an excellent support to language classes and is an effective way to refine your language skills

Academic calendar

The Italian university period is divided into an academic year, which begins on 1st November and ends on 31st October of the following year. However, lectures begin in October and finish in mid-June. Courses may be extensive (lasting the full year) or intensive (two semesters: the first one running until January, then, after a break in February, a second one till mid-June).
There are holidays for Christmas, Easter and a longer summer vacation.
Lectures take place from Monday to Friday, both mornings and afternoons, and occasionally on Saturday mornings. Every year the faculties publish a specific guide of their courses with lecturer names and syllabi. They are available only in Italian.

Examinations

There are two exam sessions:
summer and autumn, and a few days before the exam students must register on the list which can be found in the appropriate Department or Institute. The exams may be exclusively oral or include the preparation of a short written dissertation.
Before the Accademic Year 2001/2002 the marking system ranges was from 1 to 30; with the minimum pass mark being 18 and the maximum being 30 cum laude.
Now the marking system ranges is based on a formative credit system (CFU) - 30 credits for semester - 60 in a year.
The CFU system is linked to the ECTS (European community credit transfer system).
