The Master Course in “Biomedical Engineering” starts from the basic knowledge and expertise that the student has acquired during the Undergraduate Course in “Ingegneria Biomedica” and deepens and integrates them with more specialized knowledge relative both to traditional and innovative sectors. The objective is to form a professional figure that is polyvalent, i.e. able to operate correctly both within companies and in clinical or health research contexts. All lectures and training materials are provided to students in English language and limitedly to some characterizing courses these teachings will be taught by teachers who come from foreign institutions and that are very active in terms of research as well as of teaching activities. In this way, students will have, in addition to more scientific expertise, also an opening to international cultural contexts, that is essential in the present job-market situation. In order to achieve the above specified objectives the Master Course in “Biomedical Engineering” will provide, mainly, the specific competencies relative to the bioengineering applications to the analysis of locomotor and cardiovascular systems.

The course will supply instruments for the measurement, and the methods and the technologies for the analysis of data, signals and images of these two fundamental physiological systems. Furthermore, the Master course will also provide expertise on advanced techniques of bioinformatics and modern computational tools applied to scientific research in the biomedical and biological fields, on modeling and control of metabolic system, on assistive robotics, and will provide the student, at his/her choice, competence as of bionanotechnology, biomaterials, problems related to electrical and electromagnetic safety of biomedical devices, medical statistics, ICT techniques for the transmission of data from sensors for domotic applications useful to monitor the activities of daily living, as well as materials that integrate and deepen the knowledge of mathematics and automatic controls applied to bioengineering. The whole Master Course is organized in 120 ECTS: 87 ECTS are relative to mandatory courses, 12 ECTS are relative to courses at student free choice on a repertoire of 9 non-mandatory courses, and the remaining are for stage/internship and thesis activities.

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Function in a context of work:

The master's degree in Biomedical Engineering starts with the basic knowledge of the field that the student has acquired during the three-year bachelor degree and deepens them.

The goal is to form a multivariate professional figure able to operate properly both within companies and in clinical / healthcare or research contexts.

In particularly within a company, the biomedical engineer with a master degree will have to carry out its activity to support the design of devices, for monitoring, diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention. The main functions are the definition of specifications, the coordination of project activities with other professional figures (electronic engineer, computer technician), for testing, validation, and certification of the product.

Within clinical / healthcare facilities, the biomedical engineer  with a master degree will need to integrate with the staff involved in clinical engineering services by applying his/her know-how to advanced methodologies and technologies for the acquisition and management of advanced health technologies. More specifically, he/she will have to work with healthcare professionals and managers in defining plans for acquiring new technology or monitoring existing ones, collaborating with healthcare professionals and bursar during the acquisition process, supporting healthcare professionals in the correct and safe use of medical devices in order to reduce the clinical risk and ensure its effectiveness.

In the field of research, he/she can find employment in R & D centers in companies or institutional research centers and will be able to deepen his/her skills by analyzing industry literature, applying and / or developing innovative methodologies and supporting the clinical validation of the products developed.

After completing the state examination, and enrolling at the engineers’ list in accordance with current regulations, a master degree in Biomedical Engineering allows freelancer (feasibility studies, design, technical arbitrations, expert inquiries or as expert Court, etc.) and access to public competitions (eg at various ASURs).

Skills associated with  function:

In order to achieve the goals specified above in the Master of Science Course in Biomedical Engineering, students will acquire a high level of cultural and professional training oriented at  high qualification activities in the disciplines of biomedical engineering. In particular, master graduates will have a high level of cultural and professional training in the specific topics of the biomedical engineering class, complemented by the skills that derive from the fields of Information Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Medicine, Biology, Physiology and Basic Sciences (such as eg Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics) with regard to the most innovative and applicative aspects. The acquired skills will focus on the analysis and control of complex biological and physiological systems, the development and integration of biomedical devices for diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation, data and image processing, choice of materials, use of

sensors and advanced measurement techniques, data and signal transmission, understanding data security issues and biomedical equipment, using modern computational tools for modeling and simulation and assisted design.

Employment Opportunities:

The professional fields of engineers with a master degree in Biomedical Engineering are extremely varied and rapidly evolving. It is foreseeable that they address different kinds of stakeholders (in health sectors, industry, services, etc.), they will have to analyze, quantify, monitor, optimize the impact of technologies on biological and human phenomena . The professional figure stemming from the master's degree in Biomedical Engineering can find employment opportunities in the following industrial / health fields:

- in public and private healthcare facilities, in biomedical engineering  services (or clinical engineering / biomedical technologies sercices), in the field of motor rehabilitation, sports, physical exercise and entertainment / fitness;

- computer applications for the processing of biomedical data and bioimaging, genomics and telematic health applications;

- the production and marketing industries of: special materials, prostheses / orthoses, implantable and portable devices, robotic systems for the biomedical sector, and equipment for prevention, diagnosis, care, rehabilitation and monitoring;

- in the pharmaceutical and food industries as regards the quantification of interaction between drugs / substances and biological parameters;

- the manufacturing industry in general regarding the ergonomics of products / processes and the impact of technologies on human health.

In all the above-mentioned employment areas, master graduates will be able to face planning and programming issues, product development, and complex systems management. In particular, in public and private hospital holdings, they will be able to interact with healthcare professionals, within their respective skills, in diagnostic, therapeutic and research applications.
