The five-year course of study in Building Engineering Architecture—part of the so-called 'LM-4 c.u.', namely the group of single-cycle master degrees in 'Architecture and Building Engineering'—is structured in compliance with the European Directive 2005/36/EC. It is organized to ensure a balanced distribution between theoretical and practical skills. Architectural heritage, in its various aspects and contents, from technical and constructive ones, to historical and urban ones, to the use and enhancement of heritage in a broader historical and cultural meaning, are central elements of the course of study. The professional educated within this program is a cultivated and versatile designer, who is capable of a synergic synthesis among different skills. He is an expert builder with a wide knowledge spectrum and he is able to control the entire building process, from analysis, to conceptual design, to building construction and management. Furthermore, this degree is very strategic for Italy as it is the only academic program allowing engineers to sign restoration and rehabilitation projects of listed buildings.

The master degree is recognized in Europe and it is the only degree that gives the opportunity to apply to the national exams of both engineering and architecture careers, as well as to operate in all European Union countries.
The graduates in Building Engineering Architecture are highly skilled professionals with multiple outgoing profiles. They can be employed in high responsibility activities within institutions, public and private bodies, as well as in professional offices and engineering companies operating in the fields of architecture, planning and construction, in real estate appraisal company and cultural and creative companies.

Besides the basic disciplines of the building construction, the course of study focuses on the conservation, recovery and restoration of built heritage, offering some specific courses. This learning pathway enables students to have more job opportunities in the future, addressing them in the last part of their educational program to three possible fields of interest: design and enhancement; management and use; diagnostic and conservation.

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Building engineer - architect

Function in a work context:

The five-year Master's degree programme in Building Engineering and Architecture is structured so as to ensure a balanced distribution between theoretical and practical knowledge, with a curriculum that places at its centre architecture in its various aspects and contents, from technical-building to historical and urban planning towards a new project that finds its essence in innovation.
The Master’s degree programme aims at training the professional figure of the engineer, designer and builder who is capable of synthesising between the design and technical skills typical of the best Italian tradition. A builder that is attentive both to technological innovation and quality of the built environment as well as to the urban, physical and social contexts he/ she operates in; a coordinator who, from the idea of architecture through the concept of problem-solving, is capable of synergy between the disciplines involved in the production process of architecture, with particular attention to issues related to the regeneration of existing heritage.
Through the use of architectural and engineering tools, graduates from the Master’s degree programme in Building Engineering and Architecture are able to work with full knowledge of functional, distributive, formal, structural, technical-construction, plant-engineering, management, economic and environmental as well as economic and evaluative aspects, in both the context of new constructions and in the increasingly central area of the regeneration of the existing built heritage. They are able to prepare urban plans and projects and projects for both new and regenerative works, design and calculate their structures, direct their execution and a critical re-reading of the existing heritage for the purposes of restoration projects, by coordinating, where necessary, other specialists and operators in the fields of architecture, building engineering, urban planning and architectural restoration. As a result, graduates in Building Engineering and Architecture will be able to cover roles of high responsibility in institutions, public and private bodies, as well as in professional offices and design companies operating in the fields of architecture and urban planning. Given their multidisciplinary background, graduates in Building Engineering and Architecture are able to coordinate working groups made up of all the professionals behind the projects, public and private managers, process managers and specialists from all disciplines of the construction world.

Skills associated with the function:

The professional figure of the Building Engineer-Architect can work in numerous areas, starting from the architectural project as an ordering tool of a complex and composite process of transformation, up to the production, restoration and management of buildings and spaces for the physical environment. The peculiarity of this professional figure lies precisely in the ability to control the plurality of disciplines involved in an architectural project, which allows a complete evaluation of each process, from conception to economic evaluation, construction site and safety disciplines, up to the design of the use and management of buildings.
In particular, graduates possess skills in the field of design, planning and management of the processes of transformation of the urban environment, the built environment; in the design and structural calculation of any shape and typology as well as in the design and construction of new architectural buildings; in the renovation of existing urban areas and the restoration and enhancement of the built heritage, the historical minor and monumental heritage, construction elements and materials; in technological design in relation to quality control and building process management, including economic management of production processes; in the analysis of needs and identification of resources, with particular regards to construction feasibility, procedure issues, energy issues and technological innovation as well as to the reconversion and energy management of the existing heritage; urban planning in relation to the dynamics of development and transformation of urban structures; control of the economic-evaluative and execution phases of construction and restoration in ordinary, traditional, monumental and industrial buildings, also in relation to safety conditions.

Employment opportunities:

In addition to freelance work, carried out independently or in partnership, the main career opportunities include roles of high responsibility in public and private institutions, administrations for urban and territorial governance, including museums and cultural institutions, professional offices and companies operating in the fields of architecture, engineering and construction, renovation and restoration, and design and appraisal companies. In particular, possible career opportunities are in the following fields:
- design and construction of new architectural buildings, with particular regards to architectural quality, construction feasibility, technological innovation, energy saving, procedure issues;
- renovation and restoration of the ordinary, historical minor and monumental built heritage in relation to the protection of historical and cultural values, the redevelopment and enhancement of building structures, the restoration of construction elements and materials;
- structural design and calculations;
- urban planning in relation to the dynamics of urban transformation and the recovery of degraded urban areas;
- technological design in relation to the quality of building products and both traditional and industrial construction processes, as well as to all recent technical-construction methods aimed at environmental sustainability and energy saving;
- organisation and control of the execution phases, control of all the stages of construction so as to correctly match design and production and, finally, planning of safety, both in the design and implementation phases;
- economic and estimative evaluation of existing buildings and architectural and real estate development projects.
- design of conservation and fruition strategies for archaeological complexes, as well as of museums and cultural institutions;
- planning and management of economic and communication enhancement processes of the built heritage.
Graduates in Building Engineering and Architecture can enrol in the Professional Engineers Register or in the Register of Architects, subject to passing the related qualification exam, and work in Italy as well as in all the other countries of the European Economic Community.
