The Master’s degree program in Civil Engineering aims at expanding the background of BSc graduates by providing elements for the training in the field of design of structural and infrastructural civil engineering works. To access the Master’s Degree programme, applicants are required to have a Bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, class L-7 (DM 270/04), or in Civil and Environmental Engineering, class VIII (DM 509/99), or an academic title obtained abroad and recognised as equivalent. In addition, the acquisition of an adequate number of credits in some scientific-disciplinary sectors is required for admission, as set out in the Degree Course Regulations.

The main objective of the programme is to train engineers capable of carrying out the planning, design, execution and management of the works and infrastructures typical of the civil sector and working in the field of environmental protection against natural and anthropic hazards.
The main employment opportunities are professional activity of design and technical consultancy, operation management and activities in civil engineering works, either in public agencies or private engineering firm. There is also the possibility for graduates to continue their programme of studies by applying the Ph. D. Course in Ingegneria Civile, Ambientale, Edile e Architettura, accredited by the Ministry of University and research.

The programme is structured in courses which allow students to complete and further the technical and scientific aspects of engineering in general and civil engineering in particular, through the study of characterising disciplines such as structural mechanics, structural engineering, road construction and geotechnics as well as hydraulics and seismic engineering.
In the second year, the programme allows students to learn disciplines that are more related with the construction and infrastructure fields, while also offering them the opportunity to study in depth topics of their choice by selecting some courses.
The programme, in addition to the traditional teaching supply methods, uses the e-learning platforms (Moodle - Learning Management System) as a support to the thaugth classes and lectures. Being a Mastrer’s Degree Course, the majority of lessons envised the deepening of practical themes with the presentations of case histories, visit of laboratories and work sites, where applicable, together with practice design exercises.

The final internship, which can be carried out outside the academic environment or in the departmental structures, gives graduates the opportunity to deal with problems specific to the world of work, allowing them to acquire design skills as well as skills in conducting highly complex experiments and related analysis and interpretation of results.
At the end of the programme, MSc graduates in Civil Engineering will be able to identify, formulate and solve, even in an innovative way, complex problems or problems requiring an interdisciplinary approach.
In order to ensure graduates the additional benefit of an international recognition of their academic qualification, the programme applied for EUR-ACE accreditation and was awarded the EUR-ACE label in 2018. The final aim of the EUR-ACE label is, in fact, the mutual recognition of accredited engineering degrees at a European level. The label is a guarantee that high European and international training standards are met, it facilitates the fulfilment of the necessary training requirements to be able to work in countries where the profession of an engineer is regulated and ensures the attainment of the EUR ING title (http://www.feani.org/site/index.php?id=261), which is delivered by FEANI (http://www.feani.org/site/index.php).

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Civil engineers

Function in a work context:
The Master's degree programme in Civil Engineering aims at creating a professional figure in the field of planning, design, implementation and management of civil engineering works, able to operate at the highest levels in private practice, firms, companies as well as in public administration, also internationally, combining technical competence and knowledge with organisational and coordination skills.
The Master's degree programme is aimed at graduates with a solid background in basic sciences, physics and mathematics, as well as a good knowledge of the subjects specific to civil engineering acquired during the three-year degree.
In the first year, the programme aims at completing students’ technical and scientific training by studying in depth both the basic and specific aspects of Civil Engineering. In the second year, training becomes more distinctly specialised, offering students the opportunity to deal in depth with the analysis and design of structures and infrastructures, with the aim of teaching them how to identify, formulate and solve complex problems or problems requiring an interdisciplinary approach, also by means of innovative procedures. The courses will, therefore, focus more on the design and numerical analysis of civil works, the study of the behaviour of natural and construction materials, construction and technological aspects, also by addressing and solving complex geotechnical problems. In the second year of the programme, students will also acquire the ability to consciously use three-dimensional modelling and representation techniques and will have the opportunity to study in depth some topics of their choice. The programme also provides language training for students to attain B2 or equivalent as well as didactic activities in English.
The final internship, which can be carried out outside the University or in the departmental structures, gives graduates the opportunity to deal with problems specific to the world of work, allowing them to acquire both design skills and skills in conducting highly complex experiments and related analysis and interpretation of results. The programme is completed with the writing up of the degree thesis, in which students must demonstrate they have acquired an appropriate command of the topics covered, a fair ability to act autonomously and a good level of communication skills.
At the end of the programme, thanks to the transversal analytical skills acquired, graduates will have a certain level of versatility and a strongly interdisciplinary perspective. In addition, they will possess considerable autonomy of judgment, communication skills and learning ability.

Skills associated with the function:
MSc graduates in Civil Engineering have a broad spectrum of skills and competencies. In addition to the general knowledge acquired during the three-year degree course, they develop skills and competencies to direct and organise the planning and execution of complex civil works and infrastructures, in full compliance with safety, functionality and environmental protection requirements.
They have specific skills in the areas of structures, hydraulic and road infrastructure and geotechnics. With regards to these thematic areas, they have specialised and transversal skills to:
- apply the principles, analytical, computational and experimental theories and methodologies for the modelling of structural and infrastructural systems interacting with soil and water;
- evaluate the characteristics and performances of natural and construction materials, including innovative ones;
- design and test structures and infrastructures in seismic areas taking into account the national and international regulatory frameworks;
- choose the most suitable technological solutions;
- carry out communication, relational, organisational and managerial as well as programming activities.

Employment opportunities:

MSc graduates in Civil Engineering can find employment opportunities in:
- public and private technical offices, companies dealing with the construction and maintenance of civil works and infrastructures, companies producing building materials and systems, professional firms and companies that design works, plants and infrastructures; public offices, bodies and companies that deal with the design, planning and management of urban and territorial systems and services, public and private, national and international research centres.
Subject to achieving appropriate postgraduate qualifications through specialisation courses, they can also find employment in the field of safety prevention and management activities on construction sites.
To be able to work as freelancers they need to pass the qualifying exam and subsequently enrol in the appropriate section of the Professional Engineers Register. However, they are able to work as testers only after at least 10 years of enrolling in the Register.
As required by current legislation, graduates with a sufficient number of credits in appropriate groups of disciplinary fields can participate in the admission tests for the training courses for secondary education.
Graduates will also have the necessary background to continue their studies to obtain a PhD or a 2nd level University Master's degree.
