The course of study in short

The main aim of the Bachelor's degree program in Civil and Environmental Engineering is to train engineers capable of dealing with first level of knowledge the design and management of works and infrastructures typical of the civil sector (buildings, roads, railways, airports, ports, hydraulic net, purification plants , etc. ..) and working in the field of environmental protection against natural and anthropic hazards (air quality control and management, waste and waste water characterization and treatment ).
The program has the specific objective of training first level technical profiles capable of contributing to the design and construction process of civil and environmental engineering works, from the planning of works to their realization and testing.

At first, the program provides training in basic scientific disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and geometry. It then covers aspects related to drawing, topography and materials science. Finally, it deals in depth with issues typical of civil and environmental engineering such as hydraulics, structural mechanics, geotechnics, structural engineering, hydraulic constructions, railways and airports, sanitary-environmental engineering, applied geology, environmental technical physics.

The aim is to train graduates who are capable of identifying, formulating and solving engineering issues using methods, techniques and tools that enable them to understand the impact of engineering solutions on the social, physical and environmental context in which they operate.

The final internship, which can be carried out outside the academic environment or in the departmental structures, gives graduates the opportunity to deal with problems specific to the world of work, allowing them to acquire their own relational and decision-making skills.

At the end of the program, in relation to some specific issues, graduates will have the competencies to autonomously identify problems and seek solutions.

These skills will ensure them the opportunity to work in manufacturing or service companies, in public administrations or as freelancers and contribute to activities such as planning, management and organization, in interaction with other more expert professional figures operating in the civil engineering and environmental engineering sectors.

Thanks to their skills and competencies, graduates from the BSc program will immediately find employment.

In order to ensure graduates the additional benefit of an international recognition of their academic qualification, the program applied for EUR-ACE accreditation and was awarded the EUR-ACE label in 2018. The final aim of the EUR-ACE label is, in fact, the mutual recognition of accredited engineering degrees at a European level. The label is a guarantee that high European and international training standards are met, it facilitates the fulfilment of the necessary training requirements to be able to work in countries where the profession of an engineer is regulated and ensures the attainment of the EUR ING title (http://www.feani.org/site/index.php?id=261), which is delivered by FEANI (http://www.feani.org/site/index.php).
The program, in addition to the traditional teaching supply methods, uses the e-learning platforms (Moodle - Learning Management System) as a support to the taught classes and lectures.

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Civil and Environmental Engineer

Function in a work context:

Graduates from the three-year degree programme can take on technical roles for the design and construction of civil and environmental engineering works, as well as for the survey of the condition of existing buildings for the purpose of safety assessment.
In this context, graduates can take on the responsibility of working groups carrying out technical tasks for the development of specific parts of larger projects, relating, as technical interface, with project managers at a more general level and with all the other professional figures involved.
In this sense, graduates from the three-year degree programme are able to:
- perform activities related to the design of civil, hydraulic and territorial works;
- plan the industrial production of materials to be used in civil, hydraulic and local constructions;
- assist specialists in the control and management of air quality;
- apply procedures and technologies for the characterisation and treatment of solid urban wastes as well as industrial and hazardous wastes;
- coordinate construction site activities;
- perform the activities of the administrative technician in the field of civil works.

Skills associated with the function:

At the beginning of the programme, through the knowledge of the methodological and operational aspects of the basic courses, students of the three-year programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering will acquire the skills necessary for the interpretation of engineering problems.
They will then acquire skills related to the analysis, design, construction and management of civil and environmental engineering works through the identification, formulation and solution of problems using up to date methods, techniques and tools that will enable them to understand the impact that the engineering solutions adopted will have in the social and physical and environmental context. Students will also have the opportunity to acquire competencies in the fields of air quality management for the control, protection and preservation of the environment as well as in the fields of prevention, recovery and waste disposal.
Furthermore, students of the three-year degree programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering will acquire the following additional skills:
- execution of experiments and data analyses in the laboratory activities;
- use of IT tools to support design;
- relational and decision-making skills;
- possession of the basic cognitive tools for the continuous updating of their knowledge.

Employment opportunities:

a) In the civil engineering area:
companies dealing with the construction and maintenance of civil works, civil plants and infrastructures, manufacturers of construction materials and systems, professional firms and companies designing works, plants and infrastructures, public offices, bodies and companies dealing with the design and management of urban and territorial systems and services
b) In the area of environmental and territorial engineering:
companies, public and private bodies, professional firms that deal with the design, planning, execution and management of works and systems for the control and monitoring of the environment and the territory, soil protection, the management of waste and environmental and energy resources.
c) In the area of safety engineering and civil, environmental and territorial protection:
construction sites, workplaces, public and private bodies, professional firms in which safety prevention and management activities can be developed and can be perfected and roles of responsibility for the verification of safety conditions can be held.
However, to be able to work as freelancers, graduates from the three-year degree programme must pass the qualification exam and subsequently enrol in the dedicated section of the Professional Engineers Register (Section B – junior engineer).
Besides entering the world of work, graduates from the three-year degree programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering can continue their studies by enrolling in an MSc programme in Civil Engineering (degree class LM-23) or Engineering for the Environment and the Territory (class of degree LM-35).
