The Dental Hygienist is the health operator who carries out, on the indication of orthodontist and qualified surgeons enabled to the practice of dentistry, tasks related to the prevention of orodental diseases, pursuant to the Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Health of March 15, 1999, n. 137 and subsequent amendments.
The CdS allows the student to be prepared to carry out dental health education activities and participate in projects of primary prevention in the public health system; to collaborate in the compilation of the medical odontostomatologic record and to deal with the collection of technical-statistical data. The Course prepares the student to be able to practice all those maneuvers aimed at removing tartar and at root smoothing, as well as topical application of various prophylactic means; provides education on the various methods of oral hygiene and on the use of diagnostic means suitable for highlighting bacterial plaque and dental patina, motivating the need for periodic checks; indicates the rules of a rational diet for the protection of dental health.


The figure of the Dental Hygienist carries out his professional activity in public or private health facilities, as employee or freelance.
To this end, the Bachelor’s Degree Course of Dental Hygienist held at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, provides a traineeship activity at operating units of the main health structures of the Marche Region, involving all specialties of modern medicine and health care (from Surgery to Resuscitation) and an articulated laboratory activity pre-clinical preparatory to the traineeship. All professional activities are carried out under the supervision of professionals dedicated to the coordination and activities tutoring. The CdS provides, in addition to the curricular activity, an elective teaching activity, at the student's choice, consisting of monographic courses and forums on topics falling within the subjects dealt with.

In order to promote the international mobility of students and graduates and to facilitate the processes of job placement in health facilities, some obligatory teachings are offered in English.
Furthermore, in order to develop the knowledge of the specialist language of the healthcare profession of reference of the class, with reference also to specific technical-disciplinary lexicons, in addition to the teaching of the English language (level B1) is provided a supplementary teaching of Scientific English, through which the student will acquire language skills comparable to level B2.
The Course lasts three years and ends with a final exam with an enabling value.

Once the degree has been obtained, the new graduate has the opportunity to continue their studies at the same University by accessing, through an admission exam, the Specialized Degree Course in Sciences of the Technical-Assistance Professions to obtain the Master's degree in the Class of membership (LM / SNT3).

Funzione in un contesto di lavoro: 

Nell'ambito della professione sanitaria dell'igienista dentale, i laureati sono gli operatori sanitari cui competono le attribuzioni previste dal D.M. del Ministero della sanità 15 marzo 1999, n. 137 e successive modificazioni ed integrazioni; ovvero svolgono, su indicazione degli odontoiatri e dei medici chirurghi legittimati all'esercizio dell'odontoiatria, compiti relativi alla prevenzione delle affezioni orodentali.

Competenze associate alla funzione:

I laureati in igiene dentale svolgono attività di educazione sanitaria dentale e partecipano a progetti di prevenzione primaria nell'ambito del sistema sanitario pubblico; collaborano alla compilazione della cartella clinica odontostomatologica e si occupano della raccolta di dati tecnico-statistici; provvedono all'ablazione del tartaro e alla levigatura delle radici nonché all'applicazione topica dei vari mezzi profilattici; provvedono all'istruzione sulle varie metodiche di igiene orale e sull'uso dei mezzi diagnostici idonei ad evidenziare placca batterica e patina dentale motivando l'esigenza dei controlli clinici periodici; indicano le norme di un'alimentazione razionale ai fini della tutela della salute dentale.

Sbocchi professionali:

Il laureato in Igiene dentale svolge attività professionale in strutture pubbliche o private in regime di dipendenza o libero-professionale su indicazione degli odontoiatri e dei medici chirurghi legittimati all'esercizio dell'odontoiatria.
