The course of study in short

The Bachelor's Degree Course in Physiotherapy aims to train health professionals who carry out prevention, treatment and rehabilitation interventions promoting the achievement of the maximum possible functioning of the individual in presence of disabilities, in the physical, psychological, social and occupational field, in relation to the potential expressed by the subject and by the opportunities of the environment, pursuant to the Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Health of September 14, 1994 , n. 741 and subsequent amendments.

The set of knowledge that will be acquired by the graduate, equal to 180 CFU (of which 96 of teaching in presence, 60 of professional clinical internship and 24 of didactic activities 'other, elective, professional laboratory, linguistic knowledge, information technology and thesis preparation') will constitute the cultural, scientific and relational background necessary to acquire full professional competence and to understand, face and manage pathological events that require rehabilitation and/or therapeutic intervention in all age groups, and will be achieved through participation in lectures, laboratory activities, practical lessons in classrooms equipped with rehabilitation devices, under the guidance of professors and tutors, in addition to the personal study (library, databases) of the subjects offered by the Degree Course (CdL). Particular attention will be given to the development of practical skills, to be acquired according to a progression, in line with theoretical knowledge over the 3 years, and with an increasing level of decision-making autonomy. Specifically through the achievement of biochemical, physical, statistical, anatomical-physiological, pathological, clinical, psychological and sociological skills, the graduate in Physiotherapy will obtain a solid basis of knowledge of the integrated biological aspects and functions of human organs and systems, of the statistical methodology for the detection of phenomena that regulate the individual and social life of human, of the concepts of emergency and first aid in close interaction with disciplines characterizing the CdL. The graduate will realize the construct of the profession also through characterizing skills in neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, cardiology, urology, pneumology, gastroenterology, pediatric neuropsychiatry, radiology, psychology, rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy techniques, which will enable the learning of the fundamental concepts of human and behavioral sciences, ethics and professional ethics, of physiopathology of physical activity and diseases of the locomotor system and of the peripheral and autonomic central nervous system, of physiotherapy methodologies and techniques, of etiology and pathogenesis of diseases, of pathology and clinical, of treatment of the person and of maternal and infant medicine; as well as the graduate will achieve elements of management and professional management, useful for professional development in the work contexts.

The learning ability and skills acquired at the end of the Course also allow the continuation of studies, through the attendance at Courses of the Master's Degree Class LM/SNT/02, courses of scientific specialization and of high continuing and recurrent training (master's degrees of 1st and 2nd level, specialization courses), refresher and in-depth courses (Continuing Education in Medicine), with high degree of autonomy.

The Bachelor’s Degree Course is provided in the headoffice of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Ancona and at the “Mazzoni “ Hospital in Ascoli Piceno.

 

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Physiotherapy graduates

Function in a work context:

Physiotherapy graduates are health professionals who are assigned the skills provided for by the Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Health 14 September 1994, n. 741 and subsequent amendments and additions; or they carry out, independently or in collaboration with other health professionals, the interventions of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in the areas of motor skills, superior cortical functions, and visceral ones, resulting from pathological events, of various aetiology, congenital or acquired.

Skills associated with the function

Physiotherapy graduates, with reference to the diagnosis and doctor's prescriptions, within the scope of their skills, develop, also in a multidisciplinary team, the definition of the rehabilitation program aimed at identifying and overcoming the health needs of the disabled; they  independently practice therapeutic activities for the functional re-education of motor, psychomotor and cognitive disabilities using physical, manual, massage therapy and occupational therapies; they propose the adoption of prostheses and aids, train their use and verify their effectiveness; they  verify the compliance of the rehabilitation methodology implemented with the functional recovery objectives; they carry out study, teaching and professional consultancy activities, in health services and in those where their professional skills are required.

Employment opportunities

The Physiotherapist is placed in the context of the Regional Health Service (RHS) (see national health contract), in private facilities accredited and affiliated with the RHS; furthermore, in clinics, rehabilitation facilities and centers, nursing homes, spas and wellness centers, medical clinics and / or multi-specialty clinics. The current legislation allows the carrying out of freelance activities, in individual or associated professional firms, in associations and sports clubs of various types, service cooperatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), public or private prevention services. In RHS, the annual turnover is estimated at 5% - 8%: however, an increase in the need for this figure is expected also in relation to the priority health problems highlighted by the WHO, such as cardiovascular accidents, road traumas and at work, respiratory diseases related to environmental pollution and lifestyles, overweight etc., for which the figure of the Physiotherapist is central in the process of functional recovery and improvement of the quality of life.
Furthermore, from a recent Unioncamere survey (www.unioncamere.it 30/07/09) this profession is ranked 5th among the top 10 most requested by the world of work and the most difficult to find, in the ranking of operators with "high specialization".
