The course of study in short

The Bachelor's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering trains professionals who can profitably enter the labour market. It provides the basic tools and methods required for graduates to continue increasing and updating their knowledge over time, in line with scientific and technological progress.

Graduates will be able to carry out all the technical and organisational tasks required in the mechanical production chain, from technical offices to production facilities, from plant maintenance and management to purchasing offices and commercial departments.

In details, the degree programme covers both design and processing aspects as well as production, technological and organisational aspects in mechanical manufacturing industries and power industries.

The first year is mainly but not exclusively dedicated to basic scientific education. In the second year, courses related to basic and specialized engineering education are provided. The third year is dedicated to the acquisition of engineering knowledge and skills typical of a mechanical engineer, to the internship and to the work of thesis. The course of study includes 12 free choice credits and an internship.
Teaching method is based on frontal lectures, supplemented by the use of an e-learning platform (Moodle - Learning Management System) for the transmission of knowledge and skills.
The programme is also structured to provide students with an adequate background for the continuation of their engineering studies with a master’s degree.

Professions such as engineering, medicine, architecture and others carry out work which directly affects the lives of the public. In order to assure the public that these actions and decisions are carried out safely and ethically, graduates must possess specific competencies. To ensure that engineering education programmes produce graduates who can demonstrate satisfactory achievement of these competencies, they are subject to accreditation by their professional body or another accreditation agency which carries out programme-based accreditation. In order to ensure graduates the additional benefit of an international recognition of their academic qualification, CUCS -the Unified Council of the Study Programmes in Mechanical Engineering has applied for the EUR-ACE label for its degree programmes. EUR-ACE® is a framework and accreditation system that provides a set of standards that identifies high-quality engineering degree programmes in Europe and abroad. The EUR-ACE® label is a certificate awarded by an authorised agency to a HEI (Higher Education Institution) in respect of each engineering degree programme which it has accredited.
In countries where the engineering profession is regulated, EUR-ACE® labelled programmes meet the educational requirements for becoming a Registered or chartered engineer.
- The EUR-ACE® label facilitates graduate mobility as promoted by the EU Directive on Recognition of Professional Qualification.
- The EUR-ACE® label is the educational standard for the professional card as promoted by FEANI.
- FEANI automatically includes EUR-ACE® labelled programmes in its Index which lists educational requirements for the Eur Ing title (https://www.feani.org/feani/eur-ing-title/what-eur-ing-title).

Professional profile and employment opportunitities

Mechanical Engineer

Function in a work context:

Graduates in Mechanical Engineering are Engineers with an academic background that allows them to easily join working groups made up of specialists from all sectors of Industrial Engineering and of management departments. In addition, Mechanical Engineers can coordinate specific activities carried out by technical personnel in production plants.
The main job functions of Mechanical Engineers can be summarised as follows:
- Use of standardised methodologies for the design and testing of single machine parts or power-production components; design and testing of simple or repetitive processes;
- Direct and instrumental surveys of technical parameters in machines and power systems;
- Maintenance and management of production departments, as well as management, control, verification and technical assistance.
Mechanical Engineers have a preparation which enables them to continue their course of studies to obtain the Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Skills associated with the function:

Mechanical Engineers are professionals with a solid basic and technical preparation in the industrial engineering field and specific skills in the mechanical area. The educational profile of Mechanical Engineers is thus based on a combination of fundamental knowledge and specific methodological aspects.
Graduates in Mechanical Engineering have the specific skills to:
- apply mathematical methods to model, analyse and solve simple engineering problems
- analyse machines, in terms of their functioning and the resistance of their components;
- design components and simple mechanical systems taking into account functional, constructive and energy demands;
- choose the materials and processes to be used in the production of components;
- manage and use plant machinery;
- make independent and informed decisions in cooperation with other specialists in a working group.

Employment opportunities:

The main occupational opportunity is the continuation of the course of studies for the attainment of a Master’s degree (LM33 or LM30 classes), at the Marche Polytechnic University or other Italian University.
In addition, graduates can easily find employment in manufacturing industries and in production and service facilities.
Mechanical Engineers can also find employment in public administrations or pursue a freelance career (subject to passing the qualification exam and enrolment in the Professional Engineers Register, section B).
