At the end of the 2nd World War, the province of Ancona was characterised by intense commercial activity in the town and widespread agricultural activity in the hinterland. Traditional craft activities expanded commercially, spreading throughout the region in the early fifties.

This was followed by the transformation of these craft industries into small factories, a process that marks the 60's and 70's as a period of industrialisation throughout theMarcheregion. TheMarchemodel became internationally renowned in the 2nd half of the 1970's. Although the development of many small businesses has led to industrialisation throughout the area the unbroken links with traditional and agricultural activities have prevented any socio-economic backlash.

The province of Ancona is the most industrialised area in the Marche region, and is representative of the widespread and varied industrialisation which has developed on the Adriatic coast. Production and manufacturing are concentrated in Fabriano (electrical household appliances), in Jesi (agricultural machinery) and in Castelfidardo (musical instruments) although none of these plants are large enough to dominate their sector. In addition the port in Ancona is a major Mediterranean crossroads for the transport of goods and people.
