Objective

The PhD program in Economics developed by the Department of Economics and Social Sciences is aimed at preparing economists and social scientists capable of assuming relevant positions in the fields of academic and applied research.

The positioning of the doctoral program on the national and international scene is excellent and reflects the DiSeS department's good standing in research: based on RePEc (Research Papers in Economics) data - the world's largest database of research dedicated to economics - DiSeS is in the top 7% and top 5% of the world ranking of institutions considering the last 10 years of publications of department members and the performance of PhD graduates, respectively. Nationally, DiSeS ranks 15th out of 333 Italian universities and research institutions. The same performance is confirmed by RePEC metrics on PhD quality: at the end of 2020, the DiSES PhD was ranked 175th worldwide (out of 7.550 institutions surveyed), thus within the top 2% worldwide and 4th in Italy.

DiSeS and its research groups have over time influenced the management and research strategy of the doctoral program, which is now based on historically present areas of inquiry that have been appropriately revisited and updated. Some of these areas are of international excellence, such as the one involving Nobel winner Joseph Stiglitz that led to the honorary degree awarded to him in 2018 by the Università Politecnica delle Marche. The areas, without any claim to exhaustiveness, include: for Area 13, studies related to Agent-Based Models and their macroeconomic applications; the evolution of the banking system and monetary policies; the economics of innovation, internationalization and corporate governance. For Area 14, studies related to institutional and organizational innovations in social and health integration, which also connect to the CRISS Interdepartmental Research Center based at DiSeS.
