The master's degree in Biomedical Engineering has been activated in the Academic Year 2015-2016 and is held in English by Italian professors as well as by professors from foreign Institutions highly active regarding research and didactics. In this way, students will learn advanced topics of biomedical engineering in an international atmosphere. The master's degree in Biomedical Engineering starts from the basic knowledge acquired by students during the 3-year bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and deepens and integrates such knowledge with advanced and specialized knowledge in both traditional and innovative biomedical sectors. The goal is to form a multivariate professional figure able to act properly in companies, in clinical/healthcare facilities and in research contexts.
To provide a courses as close as possible to the market demand, the master's degree in Biomedical Engineering offers the student the opportunity to choose between two curricula, the eHealth and Clinical Engineering curriculum, which deals with issues concerning the digital approach to medicine and health as well as themes typical of clinical engineering; and the Engineering of Medical Devices curriculum, which deals with issues concerning the industrial production of medical devices.
Beside the conventional modality of teaching, which consists in frontal lecturing, the master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering will also implement telematic teaching through e-learning platforms (Moodle - Learning Management System).
Starting from 2019-2020, the master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering also provides a double degree agreement with the Catholic University of America of Washington.

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Biomedical Engineer

Function in a context of work:

The master's degree program in Biomedical Engineering starts from the basic knowledge of the sector that the student has acquired during the three-year degree and deepens it.
The goal is to train a multi-purpose professional figure able to correctly operate in companies as well as in clinical/health facilities or research centers.
In particular, within a company, the biomedical master engineer will have to carry out his/her activity to support the design of devices, aimed at monitoring, diagnosis and therapeutic intervention. The main functions to be performed are the definition of specifications, the coordination of project activities with other professional figures (such as electronic and software engineers), validation, testing and certification of the product.
Within the clinical/health facilities, the biomedical engineer will have to integrate with the staff involved in clinical engineering services applying his know-how to advanced methods and technologies for the acquisition and management of advanced health technologies. More precisely, it will have to collaborate with health professionals and management in defining plans for the acquisition of new technology or monitoring of the existing one, collaborating with health professionals and the economist during the acquisition process, supporting health professionals in the correct and safe use of medical devices in order to reduce clinical risk and ensure its effectiveness.
For what concerns research activities, the biomedical master's engineers can find employment in R&D centers in companies or in institutional research centers and must be able to deepen their skills by analyzing the industry literature, apply and/or o develop innovative methodologies and support the clinical validation of the developed products.
After passing the state exam and enrollment in the register of engineers in accordance with current legislation, the master's degree in Biomedical Engineering can devote himself to self-employing (feasibility studies, design, technical arbitration, part expertise or as an expert of the Court, etc.) and access to public competitions (for example at the various ASUR).

Skills associated with function:

In order to achieve the objectives specified above in the Master's Degree Program in Biomedical Engineering, students will acquire a high level of cultural and professional training for the operation of highly qualified activities in the disciplines of biomedical engineering. In particular, graduates will have a high level of cultural and professional preparation in the specific subject areas of the class, complemented by the skills that derive from the fields of Information Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Medicine, Biology, Physiology, as well as Basic sciences (such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics) regarding the most innovative and applicative aspects. The skills acquired will concern the analysis and control of complex biological and physiological systems, the development and integration of biomedical devices for diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation, the processing of data and images, the choice of materials, the use of sensors and advanced measurement techniques, the transmission of data and signals, the understanding of issues related to data security and biomedical equipment, the use of modern computational tools for modeling and simulation and for assisted planning.

Employment Opportunities:

The professional fields of graduates in Biomedical Engineering are extremely varied and rapidly changing. It is foreseeable that they address to interlocutors of various kinds (in health, industry, services, etc.) who will have to analyze, quantify, monitor, optimize the impact of technologies on biological phenomena and on humans. The professional figure that derives from the Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering can find employment opportunities in the following industrial/health sectors:
- in public and private health facilities, in biomedical engineering services (or clinical engineering/biomedical technologies), in the world of motor rehabilitation, sport, physical exercise and entertainment/fitness;
- computer applications relating to the processing of biomedical and bioimaging data, genomics and health telematics applications;
- the production and marketing industries of: special materials, prostheses/orthoses, implantable and portable devices, robotic systems for the biomedical sector, and equipment for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and monitoring;
- the pharmaceutical and food industry regarding the quantification of the interaction between drugs/substances and biological parameters;
- the manufacturing industry in general as regards the ergonomics of products/processes and the impact of technologies on human health.
In all the occupational fields listed above, graduates will be able to deal with problems concerning planning and programming, production development, management of complex systems. In particular, in hospitals, both public and private, they will be able to interact with health professionals, within their respective competences, in diagnostic, therapeutic and research applications.
After passing the state exam, and enrollment in the register of senior engineers in accordance with current legislation, the master's degree in Biomedical Engineering can devote himself to self-employing (feasibility studies, design, technical arbitrations, expert opinions or in quality expert of the Court, etc.) and to access competitions in public bodies (such as the various ASUR).
