The course of study in short

The degree programme (BSc) in Computer and Automation Engineering (class L-8 - Information Engineering) run at Università Politecnica della Marche (Marche Polytechnic University), Ancona. Access to the course of study is if you have a secondary school diploma or other qualification obtained abroad that is recognized as suitable. Furthermore, the following are required: a good knowledge of the Italian language, logical reasoning skills, knowledge and ability to use the main results of elementary mathematics and the foundations of experimental sciences.

Adequate initial preparation is verified according to the methods described in the Academic Regulations of the Degree Programs. The Degree Program has a strongly interdisciplinary approach and aims at training engineers with a solid grounding in basic subjects and in the disciplines that characterise the area of Information and Communication Technology (Computer science, Industrial Automation, Electronics, Telecommunications), also offering the opportunity to specialise in specific aspects of the development of modern IT systems and the modelling and control of robotic industrial and mechatronics systems.

The Degree Course includes a course for students with interdisciplinary interests in computer engineering and automation and courses for students with more interests aimed at either the information technology sector or the automation sector. The demand for graduates in Computer and Automation Engineering, due to their versatility and the breadth of their preparation, is increasingly expressed in the world of work. Graduates will be able to deal with: software house and start-up; industries producing goods and / or services; companies providing Internet computing and Web infrastructure services; industrial laboratories; energy production, transformation and distribution plants; manufacturing industries; public administration and service companies; companies operating in the sector of industrial automation, robotics, automotive and mechatronic systems; companies operating in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, transport and environmental protection sectors.

The training, with both theoretical and practical multidisciplinary skills and knowledge through highly professionalizing laboratory activities and direct meeting with the main working realities of the sector for the conduct of internships, is enriched by numerous agreements with Universities around the world, thanks to which it is possible to obtain a scholarship for a period abroad. The training provided therefore meets the cultural, professional and working needs of the modern 'information society', in which information and automation technologies play a central role in redesigning and innovating all aspects related to people's lives as well as the development of economic activities. This is the reason why graduates from the programme are among the most sought-after figures on the job market worldwide.

Their skills and background allow them also to continue their studies with a master’s degree (MSc) at Università Politecnica della Marche or another university, in Italy as well as abroad. The Degree Program, without prejudice to the conventional teaching method, for the transmission of knowledge and skills, it makes use of e-learning platforms (Moodle - Learning Management System) as a support to frontal teaching.

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Computer and Automation Engineer

Function in a work context:

The main roles of graduates in Computer and Automation Engineering can be summarised as follows:
- design, implementation and management of IT systems and data management
- design, implementation and management of automation and control systems.
Their training allows them to interact with specialists from all engineering and economic-management sectors and translate requests from non-experts in computer science, automation and control into formal requirements, as well as develop simple projects on their own or collaborate in the design of complex systems.

Skills associated with the function:

Graduates in Computer and Automation Engineering are characterised by their interdisciplinary knowledge in the IT fields.
They also possess specific skills related to object-oriented and web-based programming paradigms, algorithms and data structures, database design and querying, architecture of operating systems, programming of mobile devices, software engineering, optimisation methods, control and estimation for the design of automation systems, which allow them to work in a wide range of environments as engineers and designers of systems of medium complexity, and contribute to the design of complex systems in any application context in which the principles and technologies of information technology and automation play an important role.

Employment opportunities:

Graduates in Computer and Automation Engineering can carry out their work in all the areas of the modern technological society, in particular in manufacturing or service companies, process industries, public administrations, training institutions, and as freelancers.
The course has a national and international vision, however, it addresses well the needs of the production scenario of Central Italy, which is characterised by small and medium enterprises operating in different industries. In this context, the job opportunities graduates can find both in the production sector and in that of support and consultancy services are of great interest. In fact, these small and medium companies are constantly looking for professional profiles oriented both towards the design and the management of information systems, automation systems and services necessary for the development of their activities. More specifically, the professional skills of graduates in Computer and Automation Engineering are functional to the following main job opportunities:
- companies and service centres operating in the field of information systems;
- companies providing facilities and services for information systems and networks;
- enterprises providing Internet computing and web infrastructure services;
- companies operating in the industrial automation and robotics sector;
- process industries in the mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, energy and chemical sectors;
- technical structures of the public administration that make use of IT infrastructures for the management of both internal and user services;
- industrial laboratories.
A further opportunity is the possibility for graduates to continue their studies by enrolling on a master’s degree programme at an Italian or foreign university.
