Type: First cycle Degree (3 years)

The course of study in short

The degree programme in Building Engineering provides a solid grounding in the field as well as various professional skills which are useful for the job market.

The programme pursues a twofold objective. On the one hand, it aims at training graduates who have the necessary background to be able to enrol on and successfully obtain a master's degree in the corresponding class. On the other hand, it intends to train professionals who master the technical language and concepts necessary to carry out tasks of medium complexity in various sectors of construction.

The programme provides the fundamentals of basic scientific disciplines (mathematical analysis, physics, chemistry, geometry) and building graphical representation and modelling as well as a solid grounding in the following areas of building engineering:

  • building structures and geotechnics;
  • thermodynamics and heat transmission;
  • site management and safety;
  • hydraulics;
  • construction technology and building design;
  • materials technology;
  • topography and survey of buildings;
  • economics applied to business management;
  • urban planning.

It also provides the knowledge and skills required to work in increasingly strategic professional sectors in the building and construction market, such as:

  • digital and computerised automation techniques for the modelling, management and control of building systems;
  • use of digital tools for building modelling and representation;
  • sustainability analysis of building interventions based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA);
  • advanced simulation of building performance, even in transient conditions and in a multi-disciplinary domain.

Internships are made available to allow students to gradually approach the world of work.

Professional profile and employment opportunities

Role in a work context

The degree programme in Building Engineering is structured so as to both provide solid skills for the continuation of studies and train professional figures with the necessary technical and methodological skills to be able to operate in different fields of construction and consciously interact with operators in the sector.

Graduates from three-year programme in Building Engineering can sit the qualification exam and, if successful, can enroll in the appropriate Professional Engineers Register and then work freelance.

They will have the skills to carry out medium complexity tasks in various fields of construction autonomously as well as to integrate into collaboratively structured and managed working groups. To this end, they will be able to deal with assessing the behaviour of building structural components, during the production and / or prefabrication of building components as well as for the analysis of the behaviour of structural materials. In the field of structures and in the wider sector of building technology, they will be able to deal with the definition of project objectives, the overall performances of buildings as well as of their single components, the actions to be taken on buildings to assess their behaviour in operation, the formulation of models - also in non-stationary condition – to estimate their performance or manage processes.

In addition, they will be able to contribute to the design of medium complexity building components or the management of operational planning and building site set-up processes, which concern both the organisation of the execution phase and the control of the correct implementation and testing assistance. To this end, they will also be able to use their basic competence in economic and financial analysis.

Finally, they will be able to deal with building modelling, even when it is performed using information methods and tools for creating, organising and managing information about buildings and their construction. They will be able to deal with the direct survey of buildings (also through digital documentation techniques) and urban planning and design.

Skills associated with the role

Graduates in Building Engineering can exploit their skills in construction materials, science and building technology to assess the structural behaviour of buildings and building components.

They will be able to perform the necessary analyses and identify the models and legislation pertaining to the fulfilment of the performances required for buildings and components in relation to essential construction requisites. They will be able to manage and organise building design stages and the relocation, planning and management of construction sites, as well as quality controls and testing during construction. They will be able to translate needs into technological choices. In addition, they will be able to deal with building surveys, also with the use of digital technologies to produce related documentation, and interpret, plan and evaluate interventions on an urban scale, besides contextualising building interventions into the urban context.

Further skills related to hydraulics, building automation, building technology, design processes, building structures and modelling will provide them a solid basis to perform advanced studies on building systems.

Occupational opportunities

At the end of the three-year degree programme, graduates will have the background and skills to directly enter the world of work both to carry out tasks of medium complexity independently and to integrate and collaborate with multi-disciplinary working groups or technical offices, included those of public administrations.
