The course of study in short



 

The three-year bachelor course  in Biomedical Engineering (L-8 class) is located in Ancona at the Faculty of Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Marche. The aim of the course is to create solid culture in the interdisciplinary technical-biological field, based on the integration of basic methods and basic contents with the methodologies and technologies that characterize the Biomedical Engineering field and that are related to the Information Engineering and to Industrial Engineering too. In fact, the biomedical engineer is an engineer, not a healthcare professional or biotechnologist, with highly interdisciplinary knowledge and able to apply such knowledge to the solution of  problems of medical and biological interest.

Initially, students will mainly deal with mathematics, physics and computer science, as well as elements of electromagnetism, as well as treating a foreign language (typically English). Subsequently, students will mainly deal with subjects that characterize the L-8 class such as Electronics, Electrotechnics, Controls and Mechanics as well as Chemistry and related subjects. Finally, the disciplines will be predominantly those that characterize the biomedical engineering sector as well as other related topics in the area of ​​Measures, Materials, and free choice courses chosen by the student; the internship and the final exam will complete the course of study for a total of 180 credits (CFU).

 

Professional profile and employment opportunities



 

Function in a work context:

 

A multifaceted professional figure that is able to fit into the various work and  professional opportunities in between advanced technologies and medical-biological problems, with particular reference to: the ability to describe analytically, simulate and analyze systems and signals of  medical and biological interest; the ability to interact with healthcare staff and with the highest qualification technicians; basic skills for the study of biomaterials, for the use of devices and instruments for diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation; knowledge of the organization of patient care facilities, and the related  ethical criteria, as well as the management of health information systems.

The course of the biomedical engineering studies, thanks to the good technical and scientific bases that can be acquired during the training course, can enable profitable integration into the job world within companies that develop or produce medical devices, public or private clinical / healthcare companies , or in the business sector of the devices or services. Deepening  of their skills is then possible by continuing the studies in the one-year (first level) or two-year (second level) master's degree programs.

After completing the state examination, and enrolling at the corresponding engineers’ list in accordance with current regulations, a bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering allows freelancer (feasibility studies, design, technical arbitrations, expert inquiries or as expert Court, etc.) and access to public competitions (eg at various ASURs).

 

Skills associated with function:

 

The bachelor graduate in Biomedical Engineering should be able to:

- apply the basic knowledge of mechanical, chemical, physical, electronic, computer science for the definition of general technical specifications for prototype construction and for measuring activities;

- Apply knowledge relative to the operating principles of biomedical instrumentation for their characterization, testing, maintenance, and training;

- Apply knowledge of the physico-chemical properties of biological materials and biocompatible materials to evaluate their behavior;

- to apply analytical and numerical methods for the analysis of physiologic systems and their interaction with artificial components;

- Appropriate techniques and tools for the acquisition, processing and analysis of biological signals and data;

- Apply knowledge of movement biomechanics to  medical and sports fields

 

Employment Opportunities:

 

The professional fields for bachelor graduates in Biomedical Engineering are extremely varied and rapidly becoming. It is foreseeable that they will address various types of stakeholders  (in health, industry, services, etc. sectors) and that will have to analyze, quantify, monitor, optimize the impact of technologies on biological and human phenomena. The main employment areas are:

- biomedical engineering services (or clinical engineering / biomedical technologies) in public and private healthcare facilities, in the sport, physical exercise and entertainment sectors;

- medical informatics applied to health information systems and to software for data and biomedical signals processing, telemedicine and telematic health applications;

- the production and marketing industries of: special materials, prostheses / orthoses, implantable and portable devices, robotic systems for the biomedical sector, and equipment for prevention, diagnosis, care, rehabilitation and monitoring;

- the pharmaceutical and food industries as regards the quantification of the interaction between drugs / substances and biological parameters;

- the manufacturing industry in general, regarding the ergonomics of products / processes and the impact of technologies on human health.
