There are several role players of research and development in Italy, each of them with its own competences and roles.
Some of them carry out research activities for institutional purposes, for example public research institutes. Some others only devote a small part of their resources to researches, like industrial firms.
An important role is played by institutions (ministries, regions, etc), which subsidize and support research and development through public resources.
In particular, the public sector (universities, public institutions, and other public organizations) carries out almost the 50% of national research activities.
